In the past decade, Greece has implemented a remarkable plan to foster economic recovery, boost productivity and improve job creation. This session will review critical initiatives impacting the business environment and relevant government measures taken in the past decade to address Greece’s long-standing challenges and advance competitiveness, including institutional reforms and the creation of new legal frameworks.
Greek leaders have learned multiple lessons since the beginning of the debt crisis in 2009. This session will review how reform efforts, such as the digitalization of the public administration, the restructuring of the banking system and financial stimulus packages, helped Greece regain market and citizen’s confidence. Additionally, experts will discuss the tools used to navigate the recession, comment on the lessons learned from the experience, and pinpoint critical developments from over ten years of reforms.

Digitalization is a fundamental force shaping today’s economy and the world. Greece is implementing its 2022-2025 digital transformation strategy to promote the digital transformation of the country and develop digital skills in the Greek society. In this session, participants will learn first-hand about the progress being made in strategy implementation and get unique insights on the topic from the Secretary General of Digital Governance.
Greece is working to advance its economy and make it more knowledge intensive. The government has invested in digitalizing the public administration and has taken measures to promote entrepreneurship, accelerate research translation, drive innovation, and boost long-term growth. The GFCC and its members are proud to launch its annual flagship publication, the Global Competitiveness Principles. First established in 2010, the Global Competitiveness Principles offer an overarching framework for national strategies aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to foster innovation, competitiveness, and prosperity in the 21st century. Every year, GFCC members in more than 30 countries review the Principles to adapt its content in face of today’s critical productivity and prosperity challenges. This year's edition focuses on place-based innovation and supporting initiatives to strengthen innovation ecosystems and improve local, regional, and national competitiveness.
Societies are overconsuming the natural resources available on the planet that are critical for guaranteeing the prosperity of present and future generations and ensuring global health. It is critical to design and implement new economic models that couple future growth with the preservation of natural assets. This session will include a presentation on the global impacts of the climate crisis and a conversation about the models and initiatives that are needed to couple economic growth with the stewardship of planet Earth and its natural resources.

The war in Ukraine, persistently high inflation levels, new global security threats, and other critical geopolitical and economic developments have caused a shift in competitiveness priorities. Making sense of these transformations is essential for policymakers and business leaders. In this session, GFCC Board Members will review the state of competitiveness today, highlighting the factors shaping future competitiveness strategies and the changing dynamics in which countries and businesses operate.
Place-based innovation has become a key topic among policymakers and business leaders across the globe. To advance innovation at the local/regional level, cities and regions need to understand, connect, leverage and further develop the assets they have in hand, creating value, connecting and differentiating the place in the national and global scenarios. Human lifespan has significantly increased in recent years. By 2050, more than 2 billion people will be over 60, with the global average life expectancy around 72 years. But living longer is not a synonym for living well. People need to be able to age while maintaining good health. The Hevolution Foundation, headquartered in Riyadh, is a first-of-its-kind non-profit organization incentivizing research and entrepreneurship in the emerging field of health span science. The organization leverages multidisciplinary expertise across several knowledge areas fields to fulfill its vision of driving scientific progress in aging and supporting innovation in life sciences and medicine. In this session, Hevolutions’ CEO will present on the nexus connecting health, innovation, and sustainability.
Energy transition is the process through which we will shift the global energy supply from fossil to zero-carbon energy sources. Such a process will require investment and the deployment of new technologies, business models, policy, and regulatory frameworks – to be feasible and sustainable, such investments will require sound economic rationality. New global risks and sharp increases in energy prices have added complexity to that equation, in such a way that energy transition today needs to be fundamentally coupled with energy security - the affordable and reliable supply of energy. Economies would substantially profit from providing the infrastructures, skills and frameworks needed to include people into the innovation economy and unleashing the potential for value creation, but that requires strategic drive, investments, partnerships and commitment. In this conversation, industry, academia, and government leaders will discuss the on-the-ground strategies that can be used to include more people in the knowledge and innovation economies.

Cross sector collaboration and partnerships are essential to knowledge translation into economic value, improvements in institutions and the business environment, economic development, creating a thriving innovation economy and anything else we can think about. Innovation is more easily talked than done and, in most cases, implementing transformative initiatives to advance innovation is time-consuming and comes with lots of challenges. To build initiatives that can have impact at scale and change economic realities, leaders need to have a clear understanding about innovation processes, the existing opportunity areas, global benchmarks, the characteristics of local ecosystems and be able to create a compelling vision to mobilize the attention and the efforts of partners. This panel will review and draw lessons from initiatives and strategies to accelerate innovation in different countries.
Coming out of the Greek financial crisis, Greece officials have had to rethink using its unique assets of cultural heritage, architectural phenomena, and rich history to innovate its economy. The roots of innovation are in culture, content, art, design, and new thinking: all things Greece has had throughout world history. In a one-on-one conversation, the Deputy Greek Minister of Tourism will discuss Greek’s current model for tourism and share insights on the future of the Greek tourism industry.

There is a wide variety of models and solutions for industry-university partnerships and collaboration, as mapped and highlighted in the GFCC Optimizing Innovation Alliances report, among others. The toolkit and the possibilities for universities to partner with industry – and government labs – continue to expand, but the requirements and expectations about such partnerships keep evolving.
